Der Flug

Eigentlich war der Flug bis Montreal perfekt; dann aber kam der Inlandsflug.

Erst mal 2 Stunden Verspätung und dann komplett gestrichen. Umgebucht auf einen anderen Flug, der knacke voll war mit einer Teenager Jugendgruppe. Ich saß in der letzten Reihe zwischen zwei schwer genervten Kanadiern und Rainer mitten zwischen den Teenagern. Im Hotel waren wir dann so gegen 02:20 Uhr nachts. Nach 25 Stunden auf den Beinen waren wir platt.

Travel

The flight from Frankfurt to Montreal was „easy peasy“. But the travel from Montreal to Halifax was a challenge.

First 2 hours late and then completely canceled. We were rebooked onto another flight, which was packed with a group of teenagers. I sat in the last row between two very annoyed Canadians and Rainer in the row between the teenagers. We arrived at the hotel at around 02:20 at night. After 25 hours on our feet, we were exhausted.

Halifax ist eine interessante Stadt. Der Kompromiss zwischen den alten Hafen Gebäuden und den neuen und modernen Glasbauten ist meiner Meinung nach nicht immer gelungen. Allerdings sind wir ca. 1,5 Monate zu früh dran. Die ganzen kleinen Geschäfte und Krims Krams Läden machen erst Mitte Mai auf. Na ja ist wirklich zu verstehen, denn mit Sitzen im Freien und aufs Wasser schauen ist noch nichts. Bei knapp 8 Grad und einem heftigen Wind fällt das Stillsitzen schwer. Allerdings laufen hier einige der Männer schon mit kurzen Hosen und die Mädels mit Röcken und nackten Beinen herum. In der Werbung verkünden sie, der Frühling ist da.

Was habe ich daraus gelernt: Frieren ist eine Sache der persönlichen Einstellung.

Halifax is an interesting city. In my opinion, the combination of the old harbor buildings and the new and modern glass buildings is not always working. However, we are about 1.5 months too early. All of the small, quirky stores don’t open until mid-May. But that’s understandable, because sitting outside and looking at the water isn’t really an option yet. It’s hard to sit still when it’s barely 8 degrees and there’s a strong wind. However, some of the men here are already walking around in shorts and some of the girls are wearing skirts and bare legs. The advertisements proclaim that spring is here.

What I have learned from this: being cold is a matter of personal attitude.

This is what a market hall in Halifax looks like on a Sunday morning. There’s live music and absolutely delicious food. But when I think of the market halls in Berlin, I almost feel a bit lonely here.

Wir haben unser Auto wieder

We’ve got our car back

Am Montag den 08.04.24 konnten wir unser Auto abholen. Das ist nicht ganz so einfach. Also mit „Uber“ und allen Frachtpapieren zur Spedition. Dort nehmen sie die Frachtpapiere entgegen und stellen eine Bestätigung aus.
Mit dieser geht es dann zum Zoll. Dort gibt es viele Fragen:
Zu welchen Zweck sind wir da?
Bleibt das Auto in Kanada?
Kennen wir einen Kanadier?
Haben wir Wurst oder Lebensmittel dabei?
Haben wir Schusswaffen oder andere Waffen und Munition im Auto?
Merke: der Zollbeamte möchte aussprechen, also nicht schon vorher antworten. Das mag er nicht. (Ups)

Anschließend geht es zum Hafen um das Auto aus dem Hafengelände abzuholen. Schon bei der Spedition sind wir weiteren Paaren begegnet, die alle wie wir von Hamburg nach Halifax verschifft hatten.

Beim anschließenden Einkaufen (Walmart), Gas füllen und Wasser tanken (Canadian Tire, supernette und hilfsbereite Mitarbeiter). Das Gefühl etwas besonderes zu machen, war kurzzeitig weg. Ich bin gespannt wie vielen wir unterwegs wieder begegnen

On Monday 8. April 24 we were able to pick up our car. But that isn’t quite so easy. So we took an Uber and all of the freight documents to the freight forwarder. There they take the freight documents and issue a confirmation.
This is then taken to customs where they ask a lot of questions:
What is the purpose of our visit?
Is the car staying in Canada?
Do we know a Canadian?
Do we have sausages or food with us?
Do we have firearms or other weapons and ammunition in the car?
Note: the customs officer would like to be able to finish his sentence, so don’t answer in advance. He doesn’t like that. (Oops)

Afterwards we head to the port to pick up our car from the port area. While we were at the shipping company we met other couples who, like us, had all shipped from Hamburg to Halifax.

Later we went shopping (Walmart), filled up with gas and water (Canadian Tire, super nice and helpful staff). The feeling of doing something special was briefly gone. I’m curious to see how many we’ll meet again on the road

Sonnenfinsternis

Solar eclipse

Unglaublich aber wahr, nach 2 Tagen Regen und trüben Wetter, war heute keine Wolke am Himmel zu sehen. Die Sonnenfinsternis war von Anfang bis Ende ohne auch nur den Hauch eines Wölkchens, zu sehen.

Incredible but true, after 2 days of rain and gloomy weather, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky today. The solar eclipse was visible from start to finish without even a hint of a cloud.
