Von Nova Scotia nach New Brunswick

From Nova Scotia to New Brunswick

Wir sind von Halifax in Richtung Osten losgefahren um in Sydney (nicht Australien) nach Newfoundland überzusetzen. Die erste Nacht haben wir im Cape Breton verbracht. Ein toller Ausblick mit einem idyllischen Leuchtturm. Tja, nicht überall sind Leuchttürme nur noch Sehenswürdigkeiten. Dieser hat nachts gearbeitet und wir hatten die Nacht über Licht, kein Licht, Licht, kein Licht, im Auto.
Am nächsten Morgen haben wir alle Hundebesitzer der Umgebung auf ihrer Morgenrunde kennengelernt. Sehr freundliche und verschmuste Hundis. Ich habe noch den halben Tag nach nassem Hund gerochen.

We set off east from Halifax to ferry across to Newfoundland in Sydney (not Australia). We spent the first night in Cape Breton. A great view with an idyllic lighthouse. But not everywhere lighthouses are simply sightseeing attractions. This one was in use at night and we had light, no light, light, no light, in the car throughout the night.
The next morning we met all the dog owners in the area on their morning walk. Very friendly and cuddly dogs. I smelled like a wet dog for half the day.

Auf der Fähre nach Newfoundland war erst am nächsten Wochenende wieder eine Überfahrt frei und für die nächsten Wochen, war dort auch nur Schnee, Regen und Sturm angesagt. Da die Innenfläche unseres Autos, doch sehr begrenzt ist, wenn man noch nicht mal raus kann, haben wir entschieden die Tour durch den äußersten Nordosten Kanadas abzukürzen. (Schließlich und endlich zählt das Überleben aller Reisenden.)
Also ging es weiter Richtung Osten nach New Brunswick. Zwischendurch haben wir an einer Quelle im Wald unser Wasser aufgefüllt. Die „I Overlander“ App sagte sehr gutes Trinkwasser und die Einheimischen würden dort auch ihr Wasser holen. Ich war etwas skeptisch, aber tatsächlich wir mussten Schlange stehen, und bis wir fertig getankt hatten, standen schon die nächsten 3 Pick Up da, die Ladeflächen voll mit leeren Trinkwasserflaschen. (Kanada Größen: 4l ist die Kleinste)

There was no free spot on the ferry to Newfoundland until the next weekend and the forecast for Newfoundland was snow, rain and storms for the next few weeks. As the interior space of our car is very limited when you can’t even step outside, we decided to shorten the tour through the far north-east of Canada. (After all, it’s the survival of all travelers that counts).
So we continued east towards New Brunswick. In between, we filled up our water at a water spring in the forest. The „I Overlander“ app said very high quality drinking water and that the locals would also get their water there. I was a little skeptical, but we actually had to queue and by the time we had finished filling up, the next 3 pick-ups were already there, with empty drinking water bottles in the back. (Canada sizes: 4l is the smallest)

Die große Bucht zwischen New Brunswick und Nova Scotia hat, laut Tourismus Behörde, die höchsten Gezeitenunterschiede weltweit (ich gehe davon aus, es trifft auf alle Fälle für den Amerikanischen Kontinent zu). Eine riesige Fläche, die bei Ebbe Schlick ist und bei Flut unter Wasser steht. Daher auch ein Naturschutzgebiet mit einem Provincial und einem National Park.

The large bay between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia has the highest tidal differences in the world, according to the tourism authorities (I assume this is the case for the American continent in any case). A huge area that is mud at low tide and under water at high tide. Therefore also a nature reserve with a provincial and a national park.

Um die Felsen im Meer kann man bei Ebbe drumherum laufen. Ihr Spitzname ist „Flower Pots“ Im Sommer und Herbst ist das Meer angeblich klarer (und blauer). Zur Zeit ist es eine „Sandemulsion in schlammrot an blauem Himmel“. Die ganze Bucht hat die gleiche Farbe.

You can walk around the rocks in the sea at low tide. Their nickname is „Flower Pots“ In summer and fall, the sea is supposedly clearer (and bluer). At the moment it is a „sand emulsion in muddy red against a blue sky“. The whole bay has the same color.

Weiter geht es, Richtung Nord/Westen an den St. Lorenz Strom, der den Atlantik mit den großen Seen in Kanada und Amerika verbindet. Der Ausblick auf den, doch noch sehr zugefrorenen Strom, ließ uns an unserem Timing für die Reise mehr als einmal zweifeln.

We continue north/west along the St. Lawrence River, which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes in Canada and America. The view of the river, which is still very frozen, made us doubt our timing for the trip more than once.

Die Provinz Quebec

Die komplette Gegend ist noch sehr wild und die Häuser und Städte zeigen deutlich, dass es nicht die wirtschaftlich erfolgreichste Gegend in Kanada ist. Wir haben einen sehr schönen Platz mitten in der Ortschaft „Riviere du Loup“ zum Übernachten gefunden. Direkt an einem kleinen Wasserkraftwerk. Das Rauschen hat uns in den Schlaf gesungen. Nur so nebenbei: Das ganze ist im Sommer nur ein Rinnsal. Das zeigen die Bilder auf Google Maps.

The whole area is still very wild and the houses and towns clearly show that this is not the most economically successful area in Canada. We found a very nice place to spend the night in the middle of the village of „Riviere du Loup“. Right next to a small water power station. The noise of the water sang us to sleep. By the way: the whole thing is just a trickle in summer. As the pictures on Google Maps show.

Wir haben es also in die Provinz Quebec geschafft. Entlang des St. Lorenzstromes fühlt man sich schon wie in Frankreich. Alle Straßen und Wege führen nach Quebec der Hauptstadt der Provinz. Kanada hat zwei Amtssprachen die erste ist Englisch und die zweite Französisch. Das bedeutet alle Schilder, offizielle, wie auch Hinweis und Werbung sind fast ausschließlich zuerst in Englisch und dann noch mal in Französisch geschrieben. Nur eben in Quebec (Stadt und Provinz) nicht. Hier steht es in französisch und Punkt. Noch nicht mal das weltweit eingeführte und akzeptierte Stoppschild mit dem Wort „STOP“ gibt es hier. Die Form und Farbe ist die gleiche aber es steht „ARRET“ drauf. So schön wie die Altstadt von Quebec auch ist. Die Frankokanadier sind schon ein besonderer Menschenschlag. Besonders hier in ihrer Hauptstadt.

We have made it to the province of Quebec. Along the St. Lawrence River, you almost feel like you’re in France. All roads and paths lead to Quebec, the capital of the province. Canada has two official languages, the first is English and the second is French. This means that all signs, official as well as information and advertising are almost exclusively written first in English and then again in French. Except in Quebec (city and province). Here it is only in French and period. Not even the globally introduced and accepted stop sign with the word „STOP“ exists here. The shape and color is the same but it says „ARRET“. As beautiful as the old town of Quebec is, French Canadians are a special breed of people. Particularly here in their capital.

Montreal

Nachmittags sind wir bei strömendem Regen in Montreal angekommen. Hier gab es einen tollen Platz zum übernachten. Ein Parkhaus direkt am alten Hafen mit 5 Minuten Fußweg zur Altstadt von Montreal (siehe erstes Bild im Beitrag). Dass es durch die Innenstadt nicht einfach zu fahren sein würde war uns klar. Aber nach dem richtigen Weg schauen, Umleitungsschilder wegen gesperrter Straßen zu beachten und dann noch nach den unzähligen und tiefen Schlaglöchern Ausschau zu halten, war dann doch recht herausfordern.

We arrived in Montreal in the afternoon in pouring rain. But we found a great place to spend the night. A parking garage directly by the old harbor with a 5-minute walk to the historical center of Montreal (see first picture in the article). We knew that it wouldn’t be easy to drive through the city center. But looking for the correct route, paying attention to detour signs due to closed roads and then keeping an eye out for the countless and deep potholes was quite a challenge.

Am nächsten Morgen strahlender Sonnenschein und kein Wölkchen am Himmel. Das machte Montreal gleich sehr viel zugänglicher.

The next morning! Clear sky and the sun was out. Montreal showed itself from its really beautiful side.

Nach einem Stopp an einem kleinen idyllischem See, mit fantastischen Sonnenaufgängen, fuhren wir weiter westwärts.

Algonquin Provincial Park

Wir haben den Algonquin Provincial Park erreicht. Hier waren wir 3 Nächte und sind einen kleinen Trail gewandert. Der Park ist nach wie vor einer meiner Lieblingsparks. Er ist voller, im Wald versteckter Granitklippen, er hat unglaublich schöne Ausblicke auf Seen und Biber-Dämme. Mir haben die Blätter an den Bäumen gefehlt. Das ist allerdings auch in 3 Wochen vorbei. Der Park sollte bei jeder Kanada Reise auf der Liste, der Dinge stehen, die man unbedingt gesehen haben muss. Aber Vorsicht so früh im Jahr haben die Parks zwar offen und verlangen ihren „Off Season Preis“ aber das bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass es warme Duschen gibt oder dass schon überall Trinkwasser zu Verfügung steht. Blöd ist wenn man das mit den kalten Duschen erst merkt wenn man drunter steht.

We reached the Algonquin Provincial Park. Here we stayed for 3 nights and hiked a short trail. The park is still one of my favorites. It’s full of granite cliffs hidden in the forest, it has incredibly beautiful views of lakes and beaver dams. I missed the leaves on the trees. That will be over in 3 weeks though. The park should be on the must-see list for every trip to Canada. But be careful, this early in the year the parks are open and charge their „off-season price“, but that doesn’t mean that there are hot showers or that drinking water is available everywhere. It is a pity if you only notice the cold showers once you are standing under them.

Natürlich gibt es immer Feuerholz für ein paar Dollar, so konnten wir gebratenen Bacon und Ei machen.
